Love is the Summum Bonum

LoveBook2There is no way to love your brother sincerely without loving God first, and that is precisely why God presented the Ten Commandments in that order. When you love God only, it purifies you automatically from loving idols by the process of elimination—you cannot love two things at the same time!

Love is the summum bonum, the supreme good, the utmost gift a human can aspire to and obtain. But you cannot just pray for the Holy Spirit, say a one-time confession at church and just “accept” the notion that you have it; you cannot speak in tongues to get it, you cannot buy this priceless gift, attend a university to obtain this gift, nor determine to get this gift thru strict training or fasting. You can search thru every religion in the world and never get the gift of the Holy Spirit of the perfect God.

But there is something you can do to get sincere Love, and it might not be the way you may have imagined it—here it is…if you obey God, you wind up loving your brother. You have heard this before…but now how does this work? “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.” I Peter 1:22 Notice the order and progression in this passage: once you have purified yourself, then you love your brother; indeed, not just any love but love for each other from the heart.
